Back in 1995 (yes, the last century) I was beginning to stay online for hours. Being a typical 15 year old male, I got into the chat rooms, and flirted my ass off.
In AOL's chat system, there was a room called "Doers" which I believe still exists to this day. There were the regular members, who were online nearly every day who we called "regs" for short. Some of these regs were wannabe hackers, and loved to challenge each other, and police the room with programs they created. This small group of regs were called the "Lo0niz". Now most of these Lo0niz had a prefix to their names... "plain". I don't know if this word had any special meaning to the group. I never asked. It just served to identify each other.
After a while, I got to know these people. Some were wonderful programmers, and still are. Some are software designers today, some, I understand even made it to prison for their deeds, but I won't go into that here. I was no programmer, but I knew how to download programs, or "progz" as known at the time, so they let me into the group. I had to find a cool, new name to fit in.
Now being 15 in school, you're forced (at least in the time I attended) to read Shakespeare for Literature, English, or just about any subject at one point or another. Julius Caesar was something I had been reading as a torture regimen, otherwise known as homework for a couple of weeks. The quote "Cry Havoc, and let slip the dogs of war" stuck out. I had heard it somewhere before.
Being a Star Trek fan (Star Wars, and general Science Fiction fan) I realized it was something Khan had screamed just before his demise in Star Trek, the Undiscovered Country. Anyway, the internet being what it was at that time, I searched for the definition of havoc, and it's history throughout wars of the old world.
Since this group used organized chaos, instilled panic, and gave disorder to any computer system that was used against it, the name was perfect for such a group. plainhavoc became the name. The older style HaCkErTyPe , a mix of alternating upper and lower case, was used in most of the other names, so PlAiNHaVoC became the norm.
Now this name is used in several email addresses around the world, Various Virtual Worlds, and the moniker "HaVoC" has been used to replace the traditional name in many facets of my life.
I do have one loose end in the Philippines. A resident there uses the same name in one forum about tech. It is not me, and we are not related. Eventually, he will see the light that there can be only one :p
A Would read again.
I don't remember how mine came up, I remember I was looking around and I lost something but couldn't find it but then found it after. I was about to get banned from There so I panicked and tried looking around my room for ideas and I already had one part. Lost. I looked around and the only thing I saw remotely interesting was a bottle. Lost bottle. LOL
After that I just randomly started looking at things on my computer and saw "buddies" in a sub category on MSN and hence forward. I was known as Lostbuddy1
Dunno how the 1 got in there though.
I love finding out the origins of people's usernames. It can be anything from your name, and a birth year, to a favorite activity, character, or idea. While knowing the name itself may not "fit" the actual personality on the other end, knowing how the name was created tells a lot about a person.
Want me to talk to this pinoy dude & explain to him that, "Nangiisa si HaVoC -- walang iba, kaya wag kang gaya-gaya -- ang panggalan mo'y palitan mu na!" LOL It kinda rhymes in Tagalog (Philippine language)... But not once translated. It basically says, "There's only one HaVoC -- no other [exists], so quit being a copycat -- and change your name already!" ![]()
As for my username of CrypticAsian, what can I say -- I lacked imagination at the time it was made? ![]()
Cryptic = mysterious, obscure.
Not everyone "gets" me or my sense of humor as it is cryptic sometimes... Plus the fact that I have high security clearance & I've created my own alphabet/cryptogram at the age of 10, pretty much adds to my Cryptic nature.
Asian = I'm half Asian. Pretty self-explanatory *duh*. ![]()
My original username was DiamondDave. I used that in I think 1995/96 on the first chat site I heard about through a search engine called "Excite" which still exist today. Excite owned the chat site. I used DiamondDave because.. Well I was a huge Van Halen fan at that time, and my name is also David. I used that name for along time. Up until I joined IMVU in 2007. I wanted to change my name. An old friend from Compuserve chat always called me Davy, so I knew I wanted to use that part. Then I remembered Davy Crockett. I was like well that won't work. How about Davy Rocket? At that time I also wanted to start a Real life Racing club, and extend my name further for a company name. Then Xtreme was a pretty popular way of spelling it, so that is how I came up with "Davy Rocket" Xtreme. DRX for short. Naturally my logo was super easy to come up with. Sometimes I think it is just to simple or plain, but until I can come up with a better logo, that will stay.
Davy, I think your logo is simple, that is why people remember it so well!
Sometimes the best things in life are the most simple. Don't doubt your idea, it is working well for you. Logos change all the time, but stick to your roots in what you love. In the end it will serve you best.
CrypticAsian, I love your username! I never knew we had a budding cryptographer in the community! I doubt you came up with the name from lack of imagination. It came to you because it was what felt right. I haven't spoken with you before, but I imagine you are one who thinks outside of the box. Other's might not "get" you because you don't have the same rules of thought they do. It isn't a negative, but a positive! It helps you solve problems others cannot, and allows you a creative path that others do not follow, but will always be interested in! Thanks for sharing your story!
Nice way of looking at things, HaVoC, you are soooo going on my buddies list... if I ever get out of guinea-pig mode in ThereIM. ;-)
Most of my Thereian friends would call me "Crank" for short, partly because I crank out a lot of odd-humor stuff in a seemingly cranky way, another is because it refers to the jack-in-the-box that you "crank" till something crazy pops out, and lastly cuz' I do act like some gung-ho, super-cranked person at times... LOL
My fave thing to do to unsuspecting victims (even neighbors) was to "accidentally" have them kicked off the hood by putting them on iggy... My 2nd fave is to mangle up a language or two cuz it sounds hilarious/suspicious to some, such as "I like sprekening"... or sitting on a There potty and saying "Yep, it's definitely a floater." I crack up after cuz my neighbors will yell at me to stop giving them such graphic visuals.
I can't help it, it's funny to me.
Oops! I tried to click 5 stars and it came up 4 1/2!
Nice entry, HaVoC. I knew there was a hacker amongst us! Hehe. BTW, I featured it. IF you can add a picture to it, it would look much better on the Featured display (hint hint).
