I went for a trip to do some sketching today. Feeling interested in continuing my work with flowers, I played around with some ideas. I was thinking about sketching some water plants; there are some beautiful ponds and water gardens around my town that start blooming this time of year that are hugely inspirational to me. It's funny... I have a much easier go of capturing flowers that are more freeform in structure. Gladiolas are my favorite flower, which I depicted in my painting. Their feathery petals and long arching stalks draw me right in. I am struck by the amazing, vibrant colors of water lilies, but I find their smooth, unlined symmetry to be a beast of a challenge to express. I chose some purple water iris to sketch, and had an amazing afternoon of it.
