TOPIC: I've Got Worms!

I've been an organic gardener for many years. But this is the first time that I have bought so many little friends to help me out with the composting. Usually I can't find anyone to help at all. I've come to call myself "The Little Red Hen." You know, the children's story about everyone wanting some of the bread but no one wanting to help raise the wheat first or help with the baking.
I have a modest 200 Red Wigglers. ( I ddidn't think my stomach could take handling more than that in the beginning.  I think I have set the worm bed up correctly but has anyone out there had any experience with this? One thing I'm concerned about is that we have high acid soil here. I went ahead and added some soil, but I have been reading that they don't like to eat citrus fruit because of the acidity. So not sure how much acid is too much. I don't have many newpapers for them but I have read also that they like cardboard. No mention though about how to serve it. Julienne? Blender drink?  |

Hi Mooly
My husband had a worm farm for a number of years. Although I did not have much to do with it, I do know that onions are a definite no no as they kill them....but on a more positive note, pumpkin was a huge hit  .He used to just throw the vegetables on top under newspaper and they would go for their lives. Hope you have fun with it, as they are terrifically (is that a word?) useful little creatures. |

You put me right there sitting by the window listening to those chirps in wonder. I did think about the problems of introducing outside species into new environments. I hope anyone doing this will do research into the consequences. But it sounds like you live in an area that has crickets nearby. You have a cool mind. And, Bronnieb, who would have thought I would be only 2 degrees away from a worm farmer? lol I will definitely not feed the little wormies onions. Thanks for the tip! |
