In the early days of There.com, creators primarily relied on GMAX, a free modeling software released by Discreet (later Autodesk). GMAX was instrumental in enabling users to craft a variety of 3D assets, from hoverboards and vehicles to wearables and architectural structures.
However, as technology evolved, GMAX became outdated and was eventually discontinued. This shift left a gap for creators seeking modern tools compatible with There.com’s unique requirements.
Embracing Blender for Modern 3D Development
Blender, an open-source 3D creation suite, has emerged as a powerful alternative. It offers a comprehensive suite of tools for modeling, texturing, rigging, and animation, making it an ideal choice for creators aiming to develop assets for There.com and other virtual environments.
Introducing the ThereBlenderExporter
To bridge the compatibility gap between Blender and There.com’s proprietary formats, developer Hmph! created the ThereBlenderExporter. This Blender add-on enables users to export models in There.com’s .model and .skute formats, streamlining the asset creation process.
The latest release, version 1.3.0, brings several enhancements:
- Compatibility: Tested with Blender 4.4.3 on Windows 11 and macOS Sequoia.
- New Features: Added support for additional shape keys, glasses, and earrings.
- Installation:
- Download Blender 4.4.3 here.
- Download the zip archive from the GitHub releases page.
- In Blender, navigate to Edit > Preferences….
- Select the Add-ons tab.
- Click Install from Disk… and choose the downloaded zip file.
- Enable Import-Export: There Model format and Import-Export: There Skute format.
Note: While the exporter supports glasses and earrings, custom versions of these items cannot be submitted to There.com at this time.
This tool empowers creators to utilize Blender’s advanced features while ensuring compatibility with There.com’s platform, streamlining the asset creation process.
